Lark seems to deliberately conjure and earlier age of comics storytelling by using smaller panels and very restrained compositions. The writing and art style in this book is a bit more "old school" than the previous years by Bendis and Maleev. The book ends in a horrible and soul-crushing finale that rivals many other DD stories for sheer depressive power. Matt is first in prison, then on the run, and finally caught in a devastating conflict with an old enemy. The symbolism of DD in a upside-down cruciform on the cover is not an accident. The arcs in this volume continue that fine tradition of torturing poor Matt Murdock. You don't need me to rehash the history- it's full of death and suffering. Daredevil has always been something of a bleak and tragic series.

The fifth book in the New York Times new adult series that began with Real. The first goal is to establish Algernon and Jack as opposite characters who are both artificial because they both put on a performance, or pretend to be Ernest. It explores the idea of performance, specifically, how the main characters’ personalities both change and remain unchanged within these performances. This paper links Oscar Wilde‘s play, The Importance of Being Earnest, to aestheticism, the movement to which Wilde belonged. Aestheticism, Performance and The Importance of Being Earnest □Also you can't even fathom how tired I am of reading about insecure, mousy heroines who are either very desperate to get dicked down (their only aspiration in life, it appears to be) or, in case they had already accomplished their one and only goal in life - attracted a hot guy, get cheated on by their boyfriends and/or heroes. It does pose some inconveniences for readers: I, for one, have less and less time to dedicate to searching little diamonds among a pile of trash. It's far too easy to become an author these days. If you're not creative enough to add even a few refreshing scenes to the genre's cuisine what are you doing in this profession? Sometimes I do wonder whether the writing community should be less inclusive. You can still have a surprise element when you add something original and authentic to popular tropes and classical romance scenes. I don't read romance for complex plots or thriller-type-of-crazy twists, yet it's extremely frustrating when the author says A and I can already see her B, C and D from a mile away. Guess it turned out to be a big surprise, alright. The moment the heroine only mentioned in passing she was going for a "surprise" visit I already knew she'd find her current boyfriend creampieing some other chick. □The kind of predicability this book demonstrates sucks. I was warned beforehand that this book is sort of sad (which it is), but in true Matt Haig fashion, you do feel better after having read it so I’d still consider it a feel-good novel. He’s managed to hit it big with book clubs this time around with The Midnight Library, and being a book club book lover myself, I didn’t want to be left out of the fun. The first book of his I read was historical fiction, then I moved onto a work of non-fiction which I failed to write a formal review of, but talked about on the radio a few years ago. I am continually impressed by the eclectic mix of books that Matt Haig has published in the past few years.
